The Opportunity...


At Hinkley Point C (HPC) we are revitalising the UK nuclear power industry by building two new nuclear reactors (European Pressurised Water Reactors – EPR). We are seeking a diverse team of dedicated, motivated and determined people for Reactor Operator roles, within the future Operations Department.

The selection process will consist of a telephone interview, a face-to-face interview and an assessment in the HPC Main Control Room simulator.


This is one of the final opportunities to join the excellent Reactor Operator training programmes and make a major contribution to the UK’s move to reduce carbon emissions.

What you’ll be doing…


As a Reactor Operator, once HPC is operational, you will work in the Main Control Room as part of a 24/7 shift team and be responsible for the safe and reliable operation of a nuclear power plant.


Successful candidates will undertake a Reactor Operator training programme that will provide the detailed knowledge, skills and behaviours required to safely operate a 4500 MWth EPR and associated turbo-generator. The Reactor Operator training programme will take 18 – 24 months and comprises:

  • Classroom training
  • Simulator training
  • Self-study
  • On-the-job training


Following completion of the training programme and during the commissioning phase of the project, responsibilities will include:

  • Providing operational leadership and support to commissioning activities.
  • Developing and implementing operational procedures and documentation.
  • Developing and improving training needs for future Operations colleagues.


Once HPC is operational, other responsibilities will include:

  • Providing operational leadership.
  • Monitoring equipment and system performance closely to detect changes early.
  • Controlling plant evolutions precisely.
  • Operating the plant in accordance with procedures and with a conservative bias.
  • Working well as part of a team and communicating effectively.
  • Having a detailed knowledge and understanding of plant design, system and component interactions and applicable theoretical or engineering principles.
  • Actively supporting the Work Planning organisation to ensure an operationally focused schedule.


Who you are…


As a minimum, applicants will have a relevant HNC (or equivalent).

Candidates with a relevant degree (Engineering, Science, Mathematics etc.) would be desirable.

Additional skills and behaviours we are looking for include:

  • Strong technical knowledge and ability to make decisions based on the available information.
